Negative energy and Positive energy

Does negative energy heal undead or hurt them? What about positive energy?

I have seen an item that does 1 point of each and I am wondering why that would be useful.

Some clarification on these energies would be great. (If there is something already out on the boards, please point me to the link because I didn't see it.)

Negative energy heals the unliving, harms everything else.

Positive energy harms pretty much everything unless it is something special.

If you're fighting anything other than unliving then both energies will harm the target, unless the target has some sort of resistance to particular energies.

Some instances of negative energy will harm undead. But spells like negative energy burst will heal undead.

Just for the sake of testing I took Dae into the crypts in the temple of the gods. She has a plot set of gauntlets that deal one each of positive and negative energy. Both registered damage to the skeleton warriors in the crypt.
