The explanation is that your character does not know at all what it does. It just experiments with what is on the table and tries to craft the desired stuff. During this process the ingredents are of course used up and you might find out that something is missing to let it work as desired.

Be lucky that the stuff doesn't go off in a neat explosion ...

I actually think that is a scripting error that Terry fixed once before. The code we use is basically the Avlis code for crafting AFAIK. If you fail on the crafting and have the correct items on the device you will loose them but if you are missing an item they are not destroyed. I will wait for Terry to answer though as he has the intimate knowledge of the system. I do know of slight differences between the systems but it has to do with being able to fail even if the item created is trivial.

If it is fairly recent Avlis code, it is not a scripting error. If you are crafting in research mode, and have all but one item on the device required for a recipe, there is a chance of losing things on the device to simulate materials used up in researching a recipe. It is the price you pay for the additional information gained from using research mode.

(If that's considered FOIG, I apologize. I don't think it would be, however, since it would be IC for the PC to know WHY they screwed up and lost materials.)
