So I was wondering what else is out there, hoping to get a few more genres and authors of interest in my library. Also would just be nice to have a few non game related topics of discussion going on in the forums, not always easy to get to know players through their characters and with all the different time zones, well think we all know how hectic that gets keeping track of and scheduling.
Right now I'm in the middle of the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. I have Gregpooh to thank for getting me stuck on these. I have a feeling I'll be staying in the middle for a while as I explore a few of the books I received as xmas gifts I still haven't touched yet. This series is defined as a space opera, though I don't quite agree it does them justice. The first book in the series, On Basilisk Station, starts of showcasing the main protagonist of the books as she is given her first commanding post as a Captain in the space navy. Let's just say it's a fairly rough first gig for her but she makes no excuses for the crummy assignment she gets stuck with and turns the whole situation around. More than once I had to congratulate this woman out loud for a job well done. So if you like sci-fi, military, or just a good action drama I'd highly recommend getting hooked on this series as well.
The book I just finished reading is, The Hunger Games, by Suzanna Collins. I have thetamlyone to thank for her 'gentle' nudges that I MUST read this book, I'm so glad I finally did. A quick read for me, mostly due to how I just could not put it down. Simple concept of the novel, post-apocalyptic North America, there's a central hub of civilization and several scattered slums of districts that everyone else lives in. Every year a bow and a girl from each of the twelve districts is chosen to compete in a battle royal fight to the death, as a sort of 'offering' to the Capital. The book follows the young girl from district 12 that represents her home, why she goes is a gripping moment that I may or may not have cried during....okay so maybe I cried a lot reading this book. But it's not all sappy I promise, it's a great story about struggle and surviving against odds and some pretty gritty violence. What I really liked about this author was that in the first ten pages I knew who this girl was, knew her motivations and the kind of person she was, and for me I just loved that. Also she reminded me a lot of Casey in a lot of ways so that was fun too.
I'm sure there's a fair share of you out there with your own personal favorite novels and I'd love to experience them. Lumi I know you're always telling us about the steam-punk (hope that's the right term) series on IRC you love so much. So please share, discuss, rant, rave, etc. Oh, and for the last time, I'm never going to read the Twilight Saga or see the movies so stop suggesting it!
