Okay, this is kind of personal. I knew I've been gaining weight recently. But I didn't know just how bad it was until I got on the bathroom scale yesterday.
There was some shock involved. Shock and awe.
I tried to make it better by kind-of leaning on the edge of the scale. But this didn't really work much.
Then I tried flapping my arms a little.
Then I took off all my clothes.
I was seriously considering buying a different scale, hopefully one which showed me as being lighter than I am. This is what some ladies clothing stores do, dividing the dress sizes in half, so a Size 8 is now called a "Size 4", and it seems to work for them. Unfortunately right then, my son came in, and caught his dad naked and flapping his arms while standing on a scale. He rolled his eyes, and then speared me with his best 13-year-old "why am I the only one of my friends who has to put up with this?" look.
He told me I've been spending way too much time sitting on my ass, computer-gaming, which is probably why I've gained all this weight; if I really want to lose it, I have to go exercise instead. And like a lot of things my son says, he's almost certainly right.
I hate that.
So anyway, I'm just writing this to tell you that I'm going to be cutting back a bit in my gaming. My PCs will still be around, just not as often as they have been.

Re: Twelve pounds...
I recommend "The 4 Hour Body" by Timothy Ferriss.
It's a wonderful book, and it contains many many things you can do to reshape your body. Best of all there are lots of small things that are easy to stick to. I've seen a noticeable drop over the last 6 months just from doing a few of the things he recommends. It's kind of like having an owner's manual for your body.

Re: Twelve pounds...
Best advice I have for you - and it's nothing new! - is to watch what you eat and exercise. Lower your calorie intake and focus on good, real, wholesome foods!
Of course, we all need a good treat now and then... I'm not above the occasional chocolate or chips myself!
And most importantly... Do not give up! Find an exercise you like. Why not enjoy some quality time with your son? Baseball, soccer, cycling or whatever. =)
I'm down nearly 70 pounds myself, so far, and still going down... if *I* can do it, so can *YOU*! =)
