Character names

I've seen similar threads posted on Avlis' forums, so I figured I'd ask here out of curiosity :)

Where did your characters' names come from and why did you pick them? What (if anything) does it mean? Also, how are they pronounced?

Azura...I actually never really determined the exact pronunciation. I tend to say Ah-zoo-rah, but some say it as "Ah-zhure-ah" so it sounds more like Azure. The name is simply a variant on the color Azure. The rest of her female sibling all have color-related names such as Periwinkle, etc. The last name Starwind just came about because I couldn't think of anything else, and it happened to be the last name of a family of elfish people I created on The Sims 2 and I'd previously used Azura as one of the names of the daughters.

Me'rrrokash Ba'shaak is said "Mey-ROH-KAH-sh", which emphasis on the middle syllables. Ba'shaak is "Boh-shock". The first name comes from some Wemic tribal naming system I contrived in which the children are named using syllables (or the whole name of) both parents' names. Mer's father is Rro'kash and his mother is Shal'mer. His paternal grandmother is Rok'barra. The first names are basically used to show not only family line but who the parents were. The last name Ba'shaak is actually an altered spelling of my mother's maiden name, Boschock. As for why his name has 3 r's...uhh, wemics can't spell well?

Thomas is actually pronounced "Zan-Thor reaver of souls", but since I dropped the silent "Q" it is misleading.

(The actual origianal inspiration was Tom Sawyer, the clever mischievous literary character that had a penchant for exploration and getting into trouble.)

Ooh that's actually really neat! Tom Sawyer is one of my favorite literary characters. I really love Mark Twain stuff.

I thought of giving Mero the slave number 24601 in honor of another great literary character... ;)

Cynn Jarlian is a pregenerated name, but I picked it because I originally had planned to play a bad girl with her..
Cynn I pronounce ....sin, so I thought it would be fitting.
But, then she met Lomir and well, my whole character concept changed. So now she's a very good, niave girl, even being married, with a name totally opposite to her character.
Jarlian I pronounce ..Jar-lee-an

I was looking at a fighter/bard swashbuckling character. I loosely wanted him based on Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride, so decided to go for a Spanish sounding name. After bouncing some back and forth, I decided on Diego. From there, I wanted a name that matched, and figured out DeLeonne eventually.

Lomir (Low-meer) was actually something I've come across in another server I was on before I came to Arkaz, it caught my interest and as I built Lomir, I felt to give him this name. The last name Nolimon actually was part of the history of the Lord of the Rings.

Elros (El-ross) better known as Lomir's brother is a name found in the Lord of the Rings. Elros was Elrond's brother and the one who was a Half Elf for a time, like Elros and Lomir are now.

Nolimon (I don't know how it should be pronounced so help would be useful.) is a name also noticed in the Lord of the Rings history as the last name of the first reigning High Kings of Numenor. Myself, I picked it because it sounded well with both Lomir and Elros.

So yeah, both of my main characters were somewhat inspired (at least name-wise) by the Lord of the Rings. I'm not too creative when it comes to names but at least I'm honest about it! :D

Nibblet Merriweather Dorun; The Origin of a Name

In our pen & paper game, we often refer to our "tank" as "Two-bites". As in, "I don't need to out-run the dragon, I just need to out-run Two-bites". When trying to name my gnome sorceress, I mused that with so few hp she wouldn't even be one-bite! She'd be a nibblet. That tickled me silly and the name stuck.

Her family name, Dorun, was randomly generated and fit quite well. Then to give her a touch of depth, Merriweather was added. (Disney's Sleeping Beauty made a huge impression on me, back in the day. ;))
