Personality
“Tri’peh is sweet, but damn, she’s a klutz!”
It’s how she got the nickname. Get it? Tri’peh = Tripper. There’s a little Elvish humor in there somewhere.
Some used to say that Tri’peh’s refusal to choose between Pelagia and Dertmore had left her slightly off kilter. Others thought her insatiable interest in what was growing up from underfoot rather than around her kept her always looking down, so that she simply was not interested in just watching where she was going. But then, well past adolescence, it was figured out that she had just needed eyeglasses. You can’t blame it on neglect… She’s part Elf! Nobody could have predicted such a thing, and other than being a klutz, she got along well enough.
But after countless archery lessons with her mother, her father was forced to take Tri’peh into Nuvar’s hospital to figure out why she couldn’t hit the side of a mountain with a longbow. They figured out quickly enough that her vision was atrocious – but easily corrected by spectacles. The past is the past but, come to find out, she was always crawling around on all fours to study the plants and bugs and rodents… because she couldn’t see the darn things otherwise.
NO ONE knows for sure why she’s blind as a bat without her glasses. Perhaps it’s the mix of Human and Avariel blood? But so far, no one has been so impolite to suggest such a thing. Aloud.
Anyway, once she got her eyeglasses, Tri’peh became a new girl. She still tripped over her own feet, ran into animals and people and trees and opening doors, and kept her interest in books and foliage, but she nearly exploded with joy at being able to see so much so far away. There was a whole world out there she’d never noticed before! She picked up archery with great skill, and also developed an affinity for things that could not be seen by the naked eye… or the spectacled eye; things that could hide in shadows, or camouflage themselves, or go about in disguise.
A final word about Tri’peh … She’s a nerd. This possibly is probably unavoidable, considering she’s a clumsy budding Alchemist with eyeglasses. But she doesn’t mind, much. She plans to stay and live on Avarine, and possibly set up an alchemy shop one day. For now, she is looking for a mentor, as she is of the age ripe for an alchemy apprenticeship.
Conception
Tri’peh’s conception was among the very first that occurred after the wakening of Avarine, and it was somewhat unusual. (Avarine was discovered RL in February, 2008.)
Tri'peh's mother is an Avariel named Vilia Ju’ei’may, who follows Dertmore, on Avarine. After the war against the “Mage With No Name” she had helped the healing of the island by giving her life force to a mehiginus tree near the Lady’s Lake, where she had always lived before the war. She was nearby, therefore, when Rune’s party woke the Lady of the Lake, the first Lady met, and Vilia’s consciousness lit. While she was still within the tree, she overheard everything that happened near the lake from that point on.
Meanwhile, a young, rugged Human sailor named George Henry, who happened to be signed onto Captain Jissel’s crew and worked all the voyages that led up to the discovery of Avarine, fell in love with the island nearly as much as did Rune himself. He asked for and was granted from Captain Jissel a leave of absence from his job, and he stayed on Avarine to help, making camp near the Lady’s Lake, for many months. He spent countless hours caring for the land there, all the while treating the island with great respect and paying homage to his Goddess, Pelagia through prayers and deeds.
While inside her tree, Vilia, of course, followed the goings on in the area carefully by listening and reaching out with her heart, and she took great notice of George’s presence. The Lady of the Lake also came to know George, and became very fond of him, and she was aware of Vilia’s thoughts, awakening spirit and consciousness, as all the Ladies were. When it was time, the Lady of the Lake granted George the great privilege of witnessing the miracle of Vilia’s emersion from the mehinginus tree.
As any man who could see would be, George was completely dazzled by the experience, and even more swept off his feet by the peaceful Emerald eyes that gazed back at him upon Vilia’s rebirth. The moment was engulfed by the blazing flame of true love. George was often heard telling others that Vilia’s smile was the stuff that real men fought wars over, and Vilia joked that George constantly had poured love potion into the ground, soaking her roots, starting the day he arrived on the Island.
Vilia soon became with child.
Development
Tri’peh grew up on Avarine, and took to the forests the very second she could crawl. She was loved well by her parents Vilia and George, as well as all the others on the island, and was encouraged to explore at will, which she did. She learned about all of the plants and animals on the island and read voraciously when she learned how, which was early for a child. Her father taught her about Pelagia and the sea, and her mother’s own faith gave her great respect for and knowledge of Dertmore. When it came time for her to choose her own faith, it was surprisingly not difficult for her. She would worship both!
Tri’peh will grow up to be a great Alchemist one day. Ask anyone who knows her. She has the gift (and this is a matter of opinion, not a blessing of Gods or anything).
