History

In a time forgotten and unknown by most, Thessala sacrificed herself and transformed herself into a vampyress, not for the sake of immortality, but for the good of the rest of the islands. Unfortunately, as a creature of the former god Helthor (or creature of undeath), her sacrifice is not always understood. It was a price she had to pay, and live with it eternally... or so she thought. She sought a "cure" to undeath, and in the end she did... but not in the way she expected to.

Story

When Valshar inadvertently struck Helthor out of the heavens, the Sphere of death and Helthor crashed upon the mortal planes. The Sphere of Death took on the physical form of a crystal skull which came into Thessala's possession for a time.

When the mortal form of Helthor sought to elevate himself, he required the Death of an unborn child in an unholy ritual. The motives of the mortals bearing witness in the ritual were mixed. Some sought to stop Helthor from returning as a god. Others, want to prevent the cruel sacrifice of an unborn child. And yet, there were some, with even darker plans that were in service for the goddess Valshar.

Whatever the motives were, the ritual would be reversed and destroyed if an Undead were "sacrificed" in the ritual instead of an unborn child - and Thessala was slained by the adventurers bearing witness to the ritual.

It would be unknown if it was a miscalculation on the part of Valshar, or perhaps it was the compassion of some other god that stepped in, or just sheer fortune that the Sphere of Death required a host to return to, or even Helthor's last dying strength to deny Valshar the last vestiges of his power, Thessala's "death" elevated her to the goddess of death upon the demise of Helthor, freeing her from the curse of undeath.

Church

The church of Thessala is neutral to almost all political matters. They are care-takers of graveyards, giving funerals for the homeless, hunters of undead, and often philosophers/monks meditating the meaning of life & death. While the church preach that death should not be feared as it is a natural process that happens to all mortals, they hold that one should not seek death senselessly.
