History
Evident in the demeanor of this cat from the moment she trotted onto the shore, at the heels of a visitor from offword, is the fact that she has spent more time among demihumankind than in the wild. Her initial attitude towards strangers is one of curiousity, and her friendship can soon be won by skillful petting or presents of food. Barring this, she soon regards a stranger with indifference. Following at a distance is a larger, warier male, whose attitude towards civilization is one of reluctant tolerance; yet he follows the lead of the female in all dealings with demihumankind, even when he clearly disapproves.
After wandering through town, the two cats followed their noses to a barn overrun with rats, into whose midst they plunged with happy abandon. The large male was clearly the more skilled hunter, and took the lead in ratting as the female did in town. The female showed no inclination to molest the livestock, although the male did cast a few rueful glances at the piglets.
After feasting on rats, the female led the way back into town. Smelling a newcomer, she approached a man sitting near the gate, a human-sized man robed in black and purple and carrying a staff tipped with a dark sphere. She sniffed at him with evident curiosity; but then another cat even bigger than the larger male suddenly appeared. She started to sniff the new arrival too, but it clearly had no patience with his, hissing and growling. Both of the earlier-arrived cats laid back their ears and fuzzed, fur standing on end, hissing and growling in return; the female crouching, and the male arching his back.
"Kill it if you want to," the man said to the the new-arrived cat, and it leapt on the female's back. Instantly the female's partner tore at the attacker with tooth and claw, but the bigger cat struck back, laying him bleeding on the ground. The female fought the big newcomer for an instant more, then fled, bleeding heavily from deep gashes, screaming and snarling.
The first pair of cats have been occasionally seen again since, skirting the old hamlet warily.
